Understanding the Problem: Barriers to Valuing Body, Mind, and Spirit

“You can’t achieve a value you don’t believe.”

There are a variety of social and cultural issues that keep women and men from being successful with weight loss and maintenance. Here are 5 primary barriers that can potentially undermine a healthy weight lifestyle and mindset.

Read the barriers listed below and take a moment to reflect on them. Are any of these present in your life? For each one that you experience, complete the corresponding activity.

1. Hesitation to put self first - caregiver mentality

The only way a healthy weight program can work for you is to acknowledge the importance of putting yourself first.

This doesn't mean neglecting your other responsibilities; rather, it means focusing on yourself first, then tending to all the other issues in your life.

Reflection: Make a list the ways you put yourself lower on your priority list throughout the day (kids, significant other, pets, job, and house). Look at the list and see how you can “pencil in” time for yourself.

Start booking appointments with yourself to exercise, to think about your food plan for the day/week, and to schedule mindful breaks throughout the day.
